Chapter Four

Maria and Mateo held neighborhood-wide auditions. They posted signs on the telephone poles and mailboxes. They also shouted about the auditions from the front yard.

Eventually, they settled on a cast of only two: one niño and one niña. But at least the kids were students from their school.

“I had no idea that you two even lived here,” Mateo said.

Jeremy grinned. “I’m usually inside playing video games. But when I heard someone yelling about auditions, I had to check it out.”

“I actually live one neighborhood over,” Lana said. “But you’re really loud. So, I asked my aunt to drive me over here.”

Maria smiled. “Just so you know, you’re our only two actors. The whole show is on your shoulders,” she said. “But no pressure!”

“Why aren’t you two acting?” asked Jeremy.
